Rocky outcrops divide the 2.5 km long, fine sandy beach at Nang Thong, some of them reaching picturesquely up to 50 meters out into the sea. During high season it is suitable for swimming at any water level. Rock pools with all manner of interesting things to find, including sharp edged sea shells, are left behind as the tide retreats. The Bang Niang river ends this beach segment to the north. At low tide, the river is barely recognizable as an obstacle, however, at high tide caution must be taken if wanting to cross as the depth increases to around shoulder height! If it must be crossed, there is usually a local ferryman to be found who will assist for a 20 Baht fee.

There are many new shops and several shopping arcades to be found along the highway H4 which is between 300-600 meters from the beach and runs parallel to it. A wide range of goods and services can be found here, including restaurants, diving shops, tailors, tour and travel agencies, minimarkets, taxi services, souvenir stores, massage parlors, money changer etc. This area is also known locally as 'Central Khao Lak' or 'Khao Lak Center.' About 30 sparsely scattered farmhouses of the original village of Bang La On are now almost lost from view with all of the new development.

The many attractive bungalows in the Nang Thong beach area have been visited regularly since the mid 1980's, mainly by German individual travelers. Around 1997 the first high quality resorts started to appear and this opened up the market to the package holiday companies. Many new comfortable bungalows and 2 storied apartment buildings have now been built.
During the monsoon season from May to October, big waves roll on to this beach area, restricting the swimming activities but apart from the odd rain shower, a good time can still be had by all.

Richard Doring informs (February 2015): This is a unique, scenic bungalow complex in traditional Thai style. 29 aircon bungalows each having a total area of 43 square meters, of which 28 square meters is the sitting room and bedroom. In each case, three bungalows stand in an open courtyard, with water features and streams in the garden. The beautiful beach is just 100 metres across the road.

Each room is equipped with all conveniences of a modern resort, there are no extra beds , though. The 23 Oriental Pool Access Rooms (3900 Baht) have direct access from the terrace to the pool, the 23 Oriental Deluxe Rooms (3400 Baht) in the upper floor are equipped with the same comfort.  The Oriental Resort features a restaurant, a bar and a fitness room. Good restaurant. All located in a scenic mature garden adorned with palm trees, kids playground. Having direct access from the H4, around 500 mts from the beach, very nice family, the father is a doctor and pursues his practice in the evening on the premises.

You need a taxi transfer to Khao Lak?

Our Taxis will take you from and to the airport safely, and our drivers have a green taxi license plate and a real taxi drivers license! All our drivers drive very carefully and defensively. The speed limit for taxis in Phang Nga Province is 90 km/h!

On this road from Phuket Airport we drive you any time of the day for only 1600 Baht, which is very good value for money (for 3 persons only 2000 Baht, night surcharge 500 Baht). The official price for two people with airport taxis is 1800 Baht (due to expensive fuel prices). Some car owners will offer this transfer for rockbottom 1300 Baht, but they are no legal taxis and have no green taxi license plate, must drive 4 times daily, and their nerves are on edge, which can be dangerous!

Prices of 700 Baht as sometimes advertised on the Internet, are fairy tales. Some mini buses offer airport transfer for 1200 Baht, but these are not private taxis for which their charge is actually too high. You may arrive hours too early for your leaving flight or have to wait for other passengers from an arriving flight.
